Clown Senator: Video Games Bigger Problem Than Guns

"Violent video games are a bigger problem than guns, Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) said Wednesday.

"I think video games [are] a bigger problem than guns, because video games affect people," Alexander said on MSNBC. "But the First Amendment limits what we can do about video games and the Second Amendment to the Constitution limits what we can do about guns."*

There isn't a single scientific study linking games to video game violence, and the theory that games do lead to violence has been debunked repeatedly. Yet why won't politicians stop scapegoating games for the violence problem? Cenk Uygur explains that the reason is what it always is...greed.

Taxes Pay for The NFL, But City Can't Afford Police

Oakland, California, the fifth-most crime ridden city in America, faced a $32 million budget deficit in fiscal 2011. It closed the gap by shrinking its police force by 18 percent, shedding 138 officers including 80 dismissals.

Untouched was the $14 million that the city pays to stage 10 games a season for the National Football League's Oakland Raiders and to host Major League Baseball's Athletics in the O.co Coliseum. The funds include operations and costs related to a swap contract, and are supplemented by $10 million from surrounding Alameda County, based on data compiled by Bloomberg from public records."*

Taxpayers subsidize NFL stadiums and land, despite teams being privately owned by billionaires. The city of Oakland dumped millions into the Raiders, but couldn't pay for city police officers. What is happening to Oakland because of this? Cenk Uygur breaks it down

GOP Badly Losing 'Culture Wars'

"The former Iowa advisor for Mitt Romney's presidential campaign said the Republican party should heed the demographic shift on issues like marriage equality.

"Frankly, the culture wars are kind of over," Dave Kochel told WHO-TV on Sunday. "And Republicans largely lost."*

According to a Romney advisor, not only are the "culture wars" over, but Republicans lost handedly, thanks to their stance on limiting gay marriage rights. Have the tides truly changed? Is the nation in agreement over gay rights? Or is there something else at play? Cenk Uygur breaks it down.

Christianity Aggressively Pushed in Texas Schools

"Students in Texas' public schools are still learning that the Bible provides scientific evidence that the Earth is 6,000 years old, that astronauts have discovered "a day missing in space in elapsed time" that affirms biblical stories of the sun standing still and moving backwards, and that the United States was founded as a Christian nation based on biblical Christian principles."*

Texas public schools are teaching creationism in schools. It's not a balanced religious studies class either- strictly Christian lessons are being taught, even pushed in the schools. How is this teaching allowable? Would a similarly-structured Islam class be okay? Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian break it down.

Former NFL Tackle Accused of Beating Boyfriend

On Monday, his name surfaced in a wild domestic disturbance case in which Harris was accused of assaulting his former boyfriend during an argument over "soy sauce and underwear," according to The Daily Journal in San Mateo."*

Former NFL Player Kwame Harris is in the news again for assaulting an ex. Why is this incident of domestic violence more newsworthy than others-- could it be because Harris is gay? Why don't we hear more about professional athletes coming out while their careers are still going strong? Ana Kasparian and Cenk Uygur break it down.

Halloween Made Me Kill My Mom And Sister

A teen that tragically (allegedly) murdered his own mother and sister claims that the Rob Zombie 'Halloween' remake inspired him, according to his own confession. Do you think he actually believes it or is he using the movie as an excuse? Could horror movies possibly give that extra push for people who already have serious mental issues? Why was this kid watching horror movies at such a young age and how old should you be before it makes sense to watch your first slasher flick? Pop Trigger breaks it down.

Sexist Propoganda - China's 'Leftover' Women

Huang Yuanyuan is working late at her job in a Beijing radio newsroom. She's also stressing out about the fact that the next day, she'll turn 29.

"Scary. I'm one year older," she says. "I'm nervous."

Why?

"Because I'm still single. I have no boyfriend. I'm having big pressure to get married": pressure from her parents, from friends, and from society.

Huang is a confident, personable young woman with a good salary, her own apartment, an MA from one of China's top universities, and a wealth of friends. Still, she knows that these days, single, urban, educated women like her in China are called "sheng nu" or "leftover women" — and it stings."*

China has developed a sexist media campaign, calling accomplished, educated, yet single women over 27 "leftover women." It not the fault of these women that there is a disproportionate number of men in China, so why should they be shamed into settling down? Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian discuss the campaign.

"Satanists are planning to rally in support of Gov. Rick Scott at the steps of his office in Tallahassee later this month.

Lucien Greaves, spokesman for The Satanic Temple, told WPBF.com on Monday that a rally is planned for Jan. 25.

Despicable - Limbaugh Calls Kids 'Human Shields'

Rush Limbaugh may have stooped to a new low.

On his radio show yesterday, Limbaugh mocked the children appearing alongside President Obama at Wednesday's announcement of gun safety measures, calling them "human shields."

"Obama uses kids as human shields, " Limbaugh told his listeners. "He brings these kids who supposedly wrote letters to the White House after Newtown, bring them up there to present a picture of support among the children for the president to do something about guns. It's gonna be very difficult, very difficult to oppose it."*

Rush Limbaugh has done something low, even for him. Most Underreported Story or 2012?

Roger Ailes, the longtime Republican media guru, founder of Fox News and its current chairman, had some advice last year for then-Gen. David H. Petraeus.

So in spring 2011, Ailes asked a Fox News analyst headed to Afghanistan to pass on his thoughts to Petraeus, who was then the commander of U.S. and coalition forces there.
